The Druids go toe to toe with london kiwis in the merit premier league

The Druids took the stage on the weekend as the 1st XV Round 17 fixture away to Bracknell fell victim to the weather.

A strong Druids side took the field, buoyed by two recent wins in league and cup. The return of many players to fitness in the performance squad has worked wonders for the strength of the Druids over recent weeks. The side featured Tim Ross following his return from travelling, Ben Watts in the second row as he works back to full fitness and Conan Osborne, Morgan Churchill, Rhydian George, Tom Thorpe and Lewis Tucker who have all had runs in the 1st XV this season.

Perhaps most pleasing was to see 4 former Colts Academy Players in the squad: Evan Jones, Chay Bailey, Finn Collins and old favourite Morgan Browne.

This was a cracking display of running rugby from two sides that really showed great endeavour and skill. Welsh crossed for no less than 6 tries, 3 of which were converted. Two on the day came from Rhydian George who was excellent at 7, one each from Iwan Humphreys, Conan Osborne, Max Brewer and a penalty Try. Evan Jones adding 3 conversions from the point.

The game started at 100 miles an hour with both sides scoring two tries in the first 15 minutes! The Kiwi’s though ran out to a 20 point lead in the first half with a talented back line that came to play rugby. However, Welsh reeled in the visitors to make for a Grandstand finish! Humphreys last minute try left a final kick of the game for the draw, which sailed just wide. Welsh winning the second half by 22 points to nil, the lead was just that little bit too much to catch!

A healthy crowd of 100 is the biggest crowd for the Druids 2nd XV this season and many congratulations to Druids Coach Paul Bessent for an excellent game! The final score ending London Welsh Druids 36, London New Zealand 38.
