The 1st XV travel to Hertfordshire for the second week in a row, this time heading a dozen or so miles further north to Letchworth Garden City. Their rugby club is 95 years old and was formed in the early years of the Garden City’s existence. Travelling supporters wishing to explore the area may want to view Sollershott Circus, the UK’s first roundabout, and will no doubt be relieved to find that the town’s ban on the sale of alcohol in public premises was lifted after a referendum in 1958. George Orwell described Letchworth as attracting “every fruit juice drinker, nudist, sandal wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, nature cure-qack, pacifist and feminist in England” - we’ll leave it for London Welsh supporters to decide where to place themselves on that list!
Letchworth’s season started with a 21-19 defeat at Hampstead but they turned this around the following Saturday beating Fullerians 27-13 at home. Losses at Chiswick and then against Datchworth completed a difficult opening four rounds of the league. A break for the first stage of the RFU Intermediate Cup brought better fortune when they ventured over the border into Essex for a 32-18 victory over Saffron Walden. Last Saturday they returned to league action at Hammersmith & Fulham losing 29-12. After five games they are 10th in the table with nine league points.
London Welsh’s visit to Datchworth in the fifth round of matches brought another win and kept the 1st XV at the top of London 2 North West, two points clear of Chiswick who host Hemel Hempstead on Saturday.
The London Welsh Supporters Club are running a coach to Letchworth leaving ODP at 11.30am. The fare is £15 for LWSC members and £20 for non-members. Call the ‘Hotline’ on 07900 411952 to book your place.
