The 1st XV hit the road again on Saturday with a trip up the M1 to Luton. The step down this season from London 1 North, where they lost all but 3 of their 26 games, hasn’t proved much easier for Luton with a defeat in both of their opening matches. The first game was at home to Fullerians (5-36) and in round two they travelled to Datchworth (33-24) and despite the loss picked up a bonus point for scoring four tries. Luton currently sit at the base of the table, one point behind Welwyn and Hammersmith & Fulham.
Luton moved to their Newlands ground in 1988 and this marked the start of a successful period for the club. A rise up the leagues took them briefly to National 3 South before falling back to London 2 level. Just over thirty years after setting up home at Newlands Luton are planning to move again and once more they are selling their ground for development to finance a brand new facility, this time north of the town.
Last Saturday London Welsh continued their two season unbeaten run with a 45-31 win over Hemel Hempstead to maintain maximum points this season and hold third place in the league, trailing the top two teams by points difference only. The London Welsh away form may not be quite as good but there has been just two defeats in that time, the last being eleven months ago, and the team will be determined to extend that record further.
For this game Luton are hosting lunch for raising funds and awareness for ovarian cancer. Places are just £15 for a two course "pink" lunch.
