We really couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the season than to have the two promoted teams going head to head at Old Deer Park. Although the league positions can’t change there is pride and bragging rights for next season to play for and we can be certain that neither side will cede an inch. London Welsh will also be looking to extend their unbeaten home record to 23 games keep pushing beyond the previous record of 20 games set over 90 years ago.
With the league now sewn up we can reflect on the successes of the season. We’ve seen 19 wins, an infamous 0-0 draw and a single defeat. 31 players have scored 122 tries between them - 40 scored in the last four games alone. The defence has been on top form too with our opposition having crossed the try line only 22 times. The average points difference runs at a fraction under 31 points per game and shows the dominance across the whole season. London 2 North West will bring new challenges but on this form there should be little to fear.
It seems a long time ago that the season opened with a trip to Datchworth’s picturesque ground where our 1st XV got off to a flying start with a bonus point win. The Greens have lost only twice since, 18-20 at home to Tabard and 14-19 at home to Stevenage, and have now not lost a game in five months. Last Saturday’s 66-7 win over beleaguered Verulamians opened up a 12 point lead over Stevenage thereby confirming their promotion as league runners-up. In 2019/20 Datchworth celebrate their 50th season and in their relatively short but successful history they have grown from a handful of players to having three senior teams and a thriving youth section. We look forward to welcoming their team, officials and travelling support to ODP.
Kick off on Saturday is at 3pm. Hot food is available for purchase and the bar will be open all afternoon until late. ADMISSION IS FREE!
