Another huge day awaits at ODP as we welcome Stevenage Town for a game that could move the 1st XV to within touching distance of promotion. London Welsh are on a nine match unbeaten run with a season record of played 16, won 14, drawn one and lost one but, of course, that defeat was against our visitors.
The cold, grey October afternoon in at Stevenage didn’t get any brighter as the game went on. Welsh scored three tries and two conversions in the first half to take a 19-7 lead into the break but were unable to make anything of the second half chances and 15 further points for Stevenage gave them victory by three points. Since that game Stevenage have lost just the once, a narrow 16-14 defeat at Tabard. Notable victories during that time include a 19-14 in over Datchworth and, in the the last two rounds, a 32-10 win at OMT’s and 70-12 win at home against Verulamians. Stevenage now hold third place in London 3 North West, tied on league points with second placed Datchworth but with one less win to their name.
The changeable weather of mid-February is a good excuse to drag out the club anorak and take a look at some of the 1st XV team stats so far. Points scored are the highest in the league with a total of 532, an average of 33 per game, and the four try bonus point has been collected from 13 of the 14 wins. Points against are also the best in the league with a mere 119 conceded, an impressive average of less than eight points per game. The win over Royston was the third time this season that the opposition have been held pointless and on only five occasions have the opposition managed to get their score into double figures. Eighty two tries have been scored (with just 18 conceded) and these have been topped up by 49 conversions and eight penalties. (We are still waiting for the first drop goal). So far 30 players have crossed the try line to score with David Gabe top of the list with 12 tries. Leading the battle for the forwards crown is Marc Weir with five of the 32 scored by the pack. Jonathan Williams’ haul of 19 points at Royston makes him the current highest points scorer on 65. No wonder the 1st XV have opened up a clear gap at the top of the table! [Anorak packed away again for the time being.]
