Much of this season sees us welcoming unfamiliar opponents to ODP and visiting new grounds but this weekend is one of the exceptions as we see the return of Royston.
Royston joined us in being promoted from Herts/Middx 1 to London 3 North West at the end of last season thanks to their second place finish, a comfortable 10 points clear of Bank of England but 17 points off our top place. Although Sonny Parker described the home game against Royston as the toughest game for the players in the first half of the season, our visitors could only score two penalties in response to four converted tries with all points coming in the first half. The margin was closer for the return leg. Royston had a 100% home record and with a 17-7 half time lead looked set to maintain that to the end of the season. Four tries in the second half took London Welsh on to 34 points and a huge defensive effort stopped Royston adding any more.
This season there are already 14 league points between our two teams. Royston opened their campaign with a 24-22 defeat at Cheshunt and then went down 44-22 when they visited Stevenage in Round 2. A home win against Finchley (34-12) has been their only victory so far and this was followed by a 47-34 loss at OM and a surprise defeat at home to Verulamians. They have picked up four bonus points to take their tally to eight and are currently 9th in the league.
Points difference keeps London Welsh behind Streetonians at the top of the table and the unbeaten run continues. The 0-0 scoreline at Hackney Marshes in the last round of games received more coverage than there would have been for any victory and the players and coaches have praised the resilience of the supporters that braved the weather. Fingers crossed for a drier afternoon this Saturday!
