Hackney Marshes may be best known for its Sunday League football (88 full size pitches apparently) but it is also home to a relatively new rugby club - 105 years younger than us anyway!
London Welsh and Old Streetonians last met in January 2017 with ‘The Onians’ taking both victories. Streetonians had visited ODP the previous October winning 47-15 and then completed the double with a 20-8 scoreline at home. That season they lost just two games, both on the road, one to London French and the other against Actonians. Promoted to London 3 North West after finishing the season in second place, Streetonians were pipped to top spot by Verulamians who had the same number of wins but had picked up two more bonus points.
Encouragingly for London Welsh, Streetonians made an easy transition to the next level with 13 wins in their first season to finish fourth. They were just 19 points behind the league winners Grasshoppers.
After four games of the current season London Welsh and Old Streetonians have won all their games with bonus points from each. The Onians’ 71-5 victory at Verulamians pushing them to top spot on points difference. They opened the campaign with a 45-24 home win against Stevenage Town followed by a closer 33-26 scoreline at Finchley. In the third round of the league Old Merchant Taylors’ travelled to the marshes losing 36-12.
Dicky Stringer, Old Streetonians’ President, has helpfully sent the following information for our travelling supporters:
“We have a great clubhouse and bar on site and there is a café serving teas etc as well.
I don’t know if you have visited us before but we are just North of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the way I go is to Stratford International Station and either a 10 minute walk through the Park or catch the 308 bus from stop C outside the station - it drops you right outside the ground, bus stop R. There is also plenty of parking on site but driving across town is a bit of a pain!
For lunch before the game there are plenty of bars and restaurants in the Westfield Centre right next door to Stratford International Station.”
Kick off is 3pm at Hackney Marshes Centre. Come along and support the team in their top of the table clash!
