London Welsh Druids got their league season underway with a comprehensive victory at Hackney RFC. The squad saw the competitive debut for a number of players, including a new pairing at half back, but they didn’t take long to find their feet.
Andrew Evans opened the scoring with a try after just seven minutes, fly half Rhys Williams’ conversion adding two more points and starting his personal haul of 25 points in the game. With 16 minutes played Rhys Williams went over the line for his first try and duly slotted over his second conversion. Harry Case scored the third try of the game which Rhys Williams converted to take hits side to a 21-0 lead after 25 minutes. The half came to a close with Druids 26-0 ahead thanks to another try for Rhys Williams.
After the break Rhys Williams added yet another try and scrum half Dan Hiscocks scored the sixth try of the game, both converted by Williams, to extend the lead to 40 points. An unconverted try for Andrew Evans pushed Druids on to 45 points without reply.
Hackney finally added to the scoring with two tries and one conversion of their own before Chris Lewis went over for Druids’ final try. Hackney had the last word with an unconverted try to give a final score of Hackney 17 London Welsh Druids 50.
Next Saturday Druids welcome London Scottish Lions to Old Deer Park. Kick off is at 2pm.
