The league season is finally here! It has been a long wait for the return of competitive rugby but we can put the delays behind us and look forward to an exciting season in London 1 South.
The opening three rounds are all local opposition, the first being a short trip from ODP to Battersea Ironsides. Formed in 1943, Ironsides lay claim to being one of the largest clubs in the country with over 1,200 players across their sections. As well s running six adult male teams they have two adult women teams, one of which is in the same league as London Welsh Women and will play them at ODP on Sunday 17th October.
Ironsides started their preseason matches with a 28-10 loss to Wimbledon 2nd XV. This was followed by another defeat, this time at Southend where the home team overcame a 17-0 half time deficit to win 18-17. Their final warm up game was again on the road where they lost 21-12 to Eton Manor.
After 18 matches in the 2019/20 season Ironsides were second with 68 league points thanks to 14 wins and 12 bonus points. Farnham were a single point ahead when the season was brought to a halt but the RFU’s calculations for the final table reversed the situation and gave Ironsides the league title by one point and a second promotion in a row.
The London Welsh coaching team have certainly pushed the squad hard during preseason, both on the training pitch and against tough opposition. Wins at Bracknell (19-12) and Brighton (40-29) were followed by the challenge of Cardiff RFC, and whilst the result went against our 1st XV the squad had the experience of playing at Cardiff Arms Park and a key yardstick for their development.
