Recap
After almost 18 months since the 2019/20 season was brought to an abrupt halt a gentle start to the preseason games would have been more than understandable but, as we know, that’s not the style of Cai Griffiths. The Director of Rugby has set the Performance Squad a challenging trio of fixtures, the first of which is a visit to London SW 1 East side, Bracknell.
Six wins in the 2019/20 campaign weren’t enough to stop Bracknell from dropping from London SW Premiership, the level they had been at since the start of the 2013/14 season.
Bracknell was formed in 1955 and played their inaugural game against Redingensians. Within a couple of years, they had their own clubhouse and this remained their base until the site was sold in 1972 to allow the construction of the current building. Former London Welsh player Bill Harding joined Bracknell at the start of the 1965/66 season and was their captain that year.
The club’s ambition was shown in 1991 with the appointment of ex-Wasps and England prop Paul Rendall as full-time Director of Rugby. Paul laid the foundations that led to Bracknell’s rise up the leagues and a brief spell in National 1.
The London Welsh squad have been looking strong in training and with Bracknell hoping to bounce straight back to London Premiership level, this promises to be a game that will be worthy of bringing our rugby drought to an end.
The match kicks off at 2 pm.
London Welsh Druids will be playing Bracknell 2s on Saturday, also with a 2 pm start.
