London Welsh and Richmond Under 16’s have merged to create a platform to maintain players in the game and a pathway to senior rugby.
This age group had fielded full sides at U15’s and fulfilled their fixtures across last season, however increasingly this was becoming more challenging. The age group management of Director of Youth and Minis, Gareth V Jones and Head Coach, Neil Jones realised in the GSCE year and with School rugby taking some of our boys away from club rugby; they had to don their thinking caps to ensure that we were able to continue to provide rugby for the boys at our club. We gathered together with Richmond and London Scottish to try and create a centre of excellence for rugby across all three clubs, but it soon came apparent that London Scottish had enough players to go it alone and were working with their Colts section as well.
After a number of meetings with Greg Ingleton and his fellow coaches at Richmond, we felt that were both singing from the same hymn sheet and wanted to provide a positive experience for this age group across the clubs. We managed to get a fixture list together of friendlies vs local clubs and we have entered the Surrey RFC Waterfall club and Quins Cup for some very competitive fixtures.
London Welsh Rugby Club and Richmond are delighted to announce a new partnership with Location Live; (a creative environments for experiences), who will be front of shirt sponsor of the new Barbarian inspired playing shirt with both club badges on the sleeve.
Location Live specialise in the planning, search, creation,
procurement and delivery of locations for all Live environments – worldwide.
Neil Jones Owner of Location Live, said: 'Sponsoring this age group for my business was very personal for me. I have coached this age group for 4 years at London Welsh Rugby Club and my son is part of this group. I have seen how his rugby has improved and his confidence has developed as he has enjoyed the environment that his club has created. I didn’t want to let go of this and was keen to support this age group through a partnership via my company, Location Live. I am incredibly excited at how this will evolve over the year and to see my own business on the front of the shirt. The association is a great way to continue to raise our profile within the London Welsh & Richmond communities
Gareth Vaughan Jones, London Welsh Director of Minis and Youth responded: 'I am delighted that Location Live are supporting this joint club initiative between Richmond and London Welsh. As a club, all we want to do is create and environment for young lads to play rugby and develop into young men who will continue to play rugby wherever in the world they end up.
Richmond rugby are providing training tops for all the players so there are no club divides during training and they all feel part of the same team with both club badges on this shirt as well. Blake Minglay, ex Natal Sharks, pro S&C coach, who has come across from Richmond last season to provide much continuity.
Greg Ingleton, Team Manager Richmond U16; ‘I am so pleased that this has come to fruition after a lot of hard work over the summer. In three very short weeks, these boys have come together and put aside any club allegiance to enjoy the environment the clubs have provided. We have picked up a number of Harlequins players and some new players to club rugby, which mean we now have 45 players in this squad, who will play in the new Barbarians shirt, whilst wearing their club socks for matches.
We would like to thank Chestertons, who continue to support all London Welsh squads for their support and Wealdon Works, a youth Charity in Suffolk, for their sponsorship of the playing shirts.
This age group trains and play every week at 11am, either at Richmond Rugby club or London Welsh. We welcome any new players.
