1st XV In Bonus Point Win At Tabard
Four tries in the rain keep London Welsh top of London 3 North West
Tabard and London Welsh had scored 98 points between them in the previous round of the league and run in an impressive 16 tries, but the heavy rain at kick off was always going to make handling difficult and limit the style of play.
It took just seven minutes for London Welsh to score the opening try. A charge down in Tabard's 22 gave Tim Ross his first try for the 1st XV and Lloyd Davies added the conversion. A few minutes later both teams were temporarily reduced to 14 men with a yellow card apiece. No further points were scored during their absence and on return to full numbers Tabard claimed their first points of the game with a penalty kick at goal. With twenty minutes gone Welsh held a 7-3 lead.
Samuel Mahoney added his name to score sheet 5 minutes later. A lineout on the 5m line gave Welsh an opportunity to attack and when the foward drive crossed the line it was the tight-head prop that touched down. Another conversion by team captain Lloyd Davies moved his team to 11 points clear.
Ben Cullen scored try number three just before half time and Jonathan Williams' conversion made the score Tabard 3 London Welsh 21 after 40 minutes.
Although the rain eased for the start of the second half neither team could make any ground in the opening 15 minutes. A penalty kick finally put London Welsh in Tabards 22 and with the home team's openside in the sin bin the Welsh pack had the advantage. Alex Laybourne scored from the lineout for the bonus point but the conversion bounced off the post and fell wide.
For the final ten minutes Tabard played took control of the game and were rewarded with three unconverted tries, narrowly missing out on a losing bonus point.
The 26-18 result gave London Welsh three bonus point wins from the first three games and they remain top of London 3 North West. Next Saturday we welcome Harrow RFC to ODP. Kick off 3pm.
