1st XV Start Season With Bonus Point Win
By The Offical London Welsh
Two tries for Chris Carns helps secure away victory
London Welsh 1st XV travelled to Datchworth for the opening round of the London 3 North West league. Datchworth had finished the previous season in 8th place and for much of the game matched newly promoted Welsh.
Early pressure produced chances for London Welsh but it wasn't until the 10th minute that the first points were scored when David Gabe crossed the line, the Datchworth defence opening up for the centre thanks to a solid London Welsh scrum and quick passes along the line. Club Captain Lloyd Davies added the conversion.
After the restart Datchworth had the majority of possession and territory but were unable to turn it into scoring opportunities with London Welsh adding the only other points of the half with a penalty from Lloyd Davies.
Half time: Datchworth 0 London Welsh 10
The first 15 minutes of the second half continued to be a close contest with neither team able to make much ground from the centre of the pitch. A penalty kick to the 5m line gave London Welsh their first scoring chance of the half and a clean catch and drive allowed hooker Chris Carns to score. The conversion was missed but the visiting team were now 15-0 ahead.
Another line-out catch and drive put Chris Carns over the line for his second try and with 10 minutes remaining London Welsh were in the hunt for the bonus point. Datchworth hadn't given up and added a well deserved try a couple of minutes later when their second row found a gap in the Welsh defence to run through for their first points. The conversion was added and the score was 7-20.
The bonus point try was scored in the final moments of the game. The London Welsh pack were proving dominant and created the space for the backs to move the ball out to Oscar Neme to score his first league try for the club. Lloyd Davies added the conversion to complete the game. This was an assured start to London Welsh's league campaign ahead of the first home game of the season next Saturday.
