Welsh win first league match of season v Watford away
A brace of tries for captain Lloyd Davies secured the victory over newly promoted Watford.
Welsh opened the scoring after just two minutes when a line out ball was gathered for props Ollie Smart and Marc Weir to make ground through the centre. A pass to Lloyd Davies put him in under the posts and he added the simple conversion.
Watford's pack were in no mood to give the visitors an easy ride and stepped up the pressure, moving play into the Welsh half for a sustained period. During this time Welsh were forced into an substitution with the injured Morgan Browne being replaced by Tom Llewellyn.
Watford kept the pressure on, edging closer towards the Welsh 22. A quickly taken free-kick and a drive for the last few metres allowed a stretch over the line for their only score of the game. The conversion bounced off the upright and with 20 minutes on the clock the score was 5-7.
London Welsh had their opportunity to score just five minutes later. Welsh Number 8 intercepted a pass and the ball was moved down the line but the final pass failed to go to hand. On the stroke of half hour Lloyd Davies scored his second try and conversion. A Watford knock on was gathered, kicked ahead and it was Davies, positioned out towards the wing, who ran through for the try.
Half time: Watford 5 London Welsh 14
The second half remained scoreless but this didn't reflect the level of commitment from both teams. The task for Welsh was made more difficult with a yellow for their left wing and Watford took the opportunity to up the pace and intensity. A dozen good phases carried them over half way and up the pitch but the Welsh defence held strong and stopped them short of the 22 metre line. London Welsh showed confidence launching attacks from deep and twice had opportunities within sight of the Watford line. Lloyd Davies unleashed a long pass to Jonathan Shankland on the wing but a solid tackle forced him in to touch and gave the home team the lineout. The final chance was thanks to a great line out throw by Marc Weir to the back of the lineout but, with just 10 metres to go, the ball was lost forward in the centre of the pitch.
