1st XV dominate to win pre-season at Kilburn
Preparation for league campaign remains on track
The pre-season match at Kilburn had been in the club diary since the end of last season but the ambitions announced over the summer added a further dimension to fixture with the chance to see the standard requires to compete in the league above.
London Welsh had the first scoring opportunity of the match. A penalty kick to touch gave an attacking line-out, a catch and drive made progress towards the line but the ball was lost forward before the try could be scored. Welsh regained possession and Lloyd Davies, team captain and fly half, broke a couple of tackles before offloading to his wing for the try. The conversion attempt dropped just short. The Kilburn restart failed to travel the required 10 metres and from the resulting scrum Lloyd Davies sent a kick down the line where it was caught on the bounce for an easy touchdown. With the conversion drifting wide, Welsh had a 10-0 lead.
The visitors dominated up-front but it wasn't until the half hour mark that they scored again when Davies slotted over a penalty for a further three points. A try and conversion finished the half when scrum half Alex Hall gathered the ball from the back of the ruck and made his way though Kilburn's defence to score under the posts.
Half time: Kilburn 0 -20 London Welsh
It was almost 15 minutes into the second half before the next score. Kilburn exploited space on the wing for a try in the corner and their first points of the game. A missed conversion left the score at 5-20.
Good passing unlocked the Welsh defence to give Kilburn their second try of the game. This time the conversion was successful. Welsh weren't finished and more pressure from their scrum forced and penalty on Kilburn's 22 metre line. Davies stepped up to add the three points. The score moved on to 12-23.
Kilburn showed strength in their replacements and increased their pace. The London Welsh defence held strong forcing mistakes in the attack and, together with disciplined play and well-drilled set pieces, they prevented Kilburn from scoring any further points.
Final score: Kilburn 12-23 London Welsh
