A somewhat depleted opposition arrived at ODP with 13 players for the fixture. Not wishing to play 15 vs 13 the Welsh quickly agreed to start the game with even numbers.
A finely balanced first half saw Chess Valley take the lead on a few occasions. The Welsh 2nd rows however had been dominate in open play and between them had seen Jonny Davies go over for 3 and his partner Ieuan Price-Davies a single try. Gruffydd Williams the Welsh 10 ensured 3 of the 5 Welsh trys in the first half were converted. The 5th try delivered on the wing by Ben Long.
The second half saw a resurgent Chess Valley with 2 trys in the first 5 minutes. Sadly injury's then began to play a part with 3 of the Chess Valley players having to retire from battle. Replaced by 3 London Welsh pulling on opposition shirts to ensure each side continued with 13 players a piece.
It was however the Welsh that finished stronger. Opening up with true Welsh style, using the ball in hand and expecting every player to play his part in loose play. Scrum half Luke Jones quickly gathered 2 ties before centre Stephen Frank scored a 3rd in the second half. It was then the forwards turn, with replacement hooker Christopher Keddie and prop Harry Archer crossing the line. That man in the second row Jonny Davies, rampant around the field in the last 20mins went over for his 4th try of the afternoon. Gruffydd Williams offering a classy kicking display from hand and conversions with a further 4 successful attempts at goal.
Throughout the afternoon the Chess Valley team has stuck to their work, contributing hugely to the afternoon's rugby and providing several trys that involved subtle interplay between forwards and back.
