London Welsh vs Teddington
By Gareth Vaughan Jones
Titanic tussle vs Teddington
A narrow and hard fought victory over a sporting and well organised Teddington team with only 1 try being the difference between the teams. London Welsh scored on almost every visit to the opposition 22 whereas Teddingon - muscular and dominant - failed to make the most of their superior posiion and possession,
The try scorers in a physical game were Tom Williams twice, Jan twice in the corner, and Glyn. The final two tries were wonderfully flowing moves with most of the team handling the ball, running in support, and carving through Teddington using the ball and their brains, rather than needing to break tackles. Some of the best rugby the boys have played all season.
Particular plaudits for Bruno Robinson, Glyn Mannes, Joel Humphreys and Tom Williams in the first half, keeping Teddington to just a handful of tries when at one point it seemed they might beat us by a cricket score. Half Time 5 - 12 to Teddington
The turning point came at half time when Head Coach, Neil Jones urged the boys with "lets get physical, physical, i wanna get physical" ; which had a more positive impact than the large crowd predicted.
The most important person on the pitch today was Gareth, our very own captain kirk officiating in emporer's purple. His regular exhortation to Teddington "behind the back foot boys" was clearly more ambiguous than it seemed, as they struggled for much of the game to work out whose back foot they should stand behind, and as the coach drove them into the setting sun, they will have reflected on the number of penalties they gave away, and how much more clinical the LW boys were, in taking their opportunities.
