Home match vs Bank of England

Lovely day for a game of rugby

A glorious morning at Old Deer Park, with a slight breeze from the Pagoda end for a match vs one of our local rivals, Bank of England. London Welsh were captained for the first time by Evan Jones, who had travelled a long way to make the kick off and play for his club. The first few minutes of the match were quite scrappy with both teams being penalised for minor offences, until London Welsh won a turnover in midfield and then went through some phases before working the ball to Edward Newton on the wing who scored a great try and placed the ball between the posts to make the conversion for Jack Godwin a straightforward one. Straight from the restart Bank recycled the ball and then scored under the posts as Welsh missed a few tackles. The conversion was scored and the game level at 7-7. Bank then won a penalty in Welsh's 22 and the scrum half took a quick tap penalty and scored as the Welsh defence were half asleep. Welsh set about putting things right and once they had worked into Bank's 22, Hugh Young ran a beautiful line to accept a well timed pass to score a great try. 12-12. Welsh then worked their way upfield through their backs and got the ball to Jack Godwin who backed his pace and scored a fantastic try in the corner. There was some question about the grounding, but the referee was right on the spot and awarded the try.
Half Time 17-12

The second half was reminiscent of the the first half, with both sides making some elementary mistakes. The scrums were uncontested as Bank didn't have enough props with them, so we couldn't see the power of the Welsh scrum. The referee had to ask a Bank player to leave the field for a while as he didn't accept his decision and with the help of the Bank coach managed to calm the player down, whilst he spent time on the sideline to reflect about his behaviour. London Welsh were camped in Bank's 22 and finally after this intense period of pressure, George Gero went through and scored a try, which Jack Godwin then converted. Bank then win a scrum in Welsh's half and go through some phases to send their winger through, when Bruno Robinson makes a fantastic tackle to save they try. Bank then recycled the ball quickly and went through the hands to score in the corner. 24 -17. Moving into the last play of the game and Ben Adams who had come on for the last 20 minutes ran through and past 5 Bank players to score and Jack Godwin added the conversion to make the final score, London Welsh 31, Bank 17.
