London Welsh Women match report - Portsmouth Valkyries, Away, 9/9/18

LWWRFC kick off their season with a tough opener on the road

London Welsh Women were on the road to Portsmouth today for the first league game of their season. Having drawn league rivals Portsmouth Valkyries for the opener, Welsh knew they were in for a highly physical and challenging game.

Building on the success of a friendly last week against Barnes which saw 7 players making fantastic debuts for London Welsh, the team started well, attacking the gain line and carrying hard to truck the ball up the pitch. In defence too, Welsh showed confidence, countering Portsmouth’s strong rucking game and ensuring maintained positive and aggressive play for the opening 20. As the cobwebs started to blow away, Welsh were able to play a more expansive game, reintroducing some of the offloads and forwards/backs interplay which so benefited them last season. After a good period of possession, Welsh were able to capitalise on their position, passing through the hands to Kat Underhill on the wing who ran it towards the try line, recycling it on being tackled to the waiting hands of Hannah Clarke who showed a great display of strength to beat a number of tacklers, twisting and stretching her way to a try.

Portsmouth were always going to come back fighting and being 5 points down seemed to be the wake-up call they needed. The next 20 minutes saw Welsh under sustained pressure and struggling to regain possession but with 1 to 15 putting in some crushing tackles and working as a unit to cover the pitch, they were able to hold the Valkyries back for a significant period. Eventually though, with Welsh down to 14 in the closing minutes of the first half, Valkyries converted a strong scrum and driving attack into points, ending the first half 7-5.

The second half saw a continuation of some solid performances from Welsh, across the pack and the backs, but as the game progressed discipline became an issue, with a number of penalties in key positions allowing Portsmouth’s very competent 12 to slot the ball through the sticks on 2 occasions, as well as setting Portsmouth up for some well worked set pieces from penalties, allowing them to carry over twice more too.

The final score was 24-5 to the home team; a disappointing start in many ways for London Welsh Women who neverless exhibited some very encouraging signs of what the team will be able to deliver this season, and during the return fixture and played, as ever, with pride and passion.

Huge congratulations to the players making their league debut for London Welsh (Mitzi Pryce, Keshal Patel, Maria Hogger and sara Sennitt), and a big thank you to Ruth Barton and Paula Cooper for once again stepping out of retirement to fill in key positions for this important game.
