Women's XV Dig Deep on the South Coast
Two evenly balanced teams battle in the rain and mud
London Welsh Women traveled to Portsmouth RFC for their final league match of the season. The outcome of the game significant in that both teams were able to win their National Championship South East West 1.
The first half saw the London Welsh pressing hard for points but it was Valkyries who managed to score twice in very difficult muddy and rainy conditions.
The Welsh new that points were vital in their pursuit of the league title. Going into the game they sat at the top of the league, 3 points ahead of their opponents. So it was vital to ensure a bonus point, possible if they could keep within 15 points of Valkyries.
The second half started quickly, more pressure from the home side on the welsh line. The welsh however showed their experience with magnificent organisation and defensive effort.
The Welsh forwards increased their dominance of the scrum and that all important try from Zoe Jeanes was the result of a truly superb team effort. 10 : 5 making it necessary for Valkyries to score twice to win and take the title.
As the clock ticked away the welsh found themselves spending more and more time in the home sides half. The final few minutes saw several reset scrums on the Valkyries line which could have seen the Welsh snick a win. The try or penalty try was not to be but the result gave the Welsh Women and their Coach Paul Braithwaite the present they wanted.
With points in the league for both Valkyries and Welsh both tied at 60 the superior points difference of the Welsh, earned over the season came into play. London Welsh Women won their league and will move on to play in the NC South East play off next sunday at Guildford sports parks against Ringwood Ladies
