“We are delighted to have Tom back with us, he is part of our recent history and hopefully a very big part of what is to come - it is great to see the continued momentum and support that we attract to our journey as we continue to build.”
Club Chairman Gwyn Williams
London Welsh RFC are pleased to announce the return of Tom May to the club in the role of Backs Coach.
Tom originally joined Welsh in 2013 and played an instrumental role in the clubs promotion to the Premiership in his first season; He played for the club in the Premiership and Championship campaigns before retiring at the end of the 15/16 season. The role fills the shoes of outgoing coach Sonny Parker and this appointment sees no less a pedigree in terms of rugby gravitas.
May captained Welsh in his final Championship campaign with the club and as an outstanding player and inspirational leader he became a much-loved member of the London Welsh family.
The centre played twice for England with both caps coming in the 2009/2010 season, and also represented England 7’s. His career prior to Welsh had seen him turn out for Newcastle, Northampton Saints and Toulon.
Tom has already joined the squad in pre-season training and is keen to get stuck into the five-year plan initiated at the beginning of last season. The plan envisages four promotions in five seasons for a return to the national leagues; one of those promotions is already in the bag. May made a brief return last season on the playing front, appearing once in the 17/18 Season for Welsh and scoring on his return.
Playing record to date: played 53 (43 in the league), 18 in the English Premiership and scoring eight tries in total.
The club board, coaching staff, playing squad and supporters all welcome Tom back to the fold and look forward seeing his impact both on and off the field.
Speaking after training May said: “It’s a good opportunity to get back to the club I finished my professional career at and give something back”
Club Chairman Gwyn Williams added: “We are delighted to have Tom back with us, he is part of our recent history and hopefully a very big part of what is to come - it is great to see the continued momentum and support that we attract to our journey as we continue to build. Cai Griffiths as head coach supported by Tom, Will Taylor together with the rest of the coaching and management, as well as a talented playing squad can look forward to an exciting season with all the support of the club behind them.
London Welsh Head Coach Cai Griffiths commented: " I'm delighted for us to have someone of Tom May’s calibre joining the club. I have played and Tom has captained me in the past and I know how talented he is. With the quality of players we have and the standard of all the coaches, I'm very confident that we will have a promotion again this year"
