London Welsh Women see out the 2018/19 season against table toppers Portsmouth @londonwelshwrfc

By The Official London Welsh

The women's team has grown within the LW Family and play their final league match on Sunday KO2:30pm

“We have come so far this season, over 14 new players have made their league debuts, 3 players have made the county squad, and the squad have all grown as rugby players and as a rugby family.” Paula Cooper

Well it’s arrived. The last league game of 2018/19 and the fixture that London Welsh Women have been looking forward to since the start of the season, the top of the table clash at home to Portsmouth Valkyries.

Portsmouth Valkyries were the opening fixture of the 2018/19 season for Welsh. With it being early in September a time when we always struggle for player availability , Welsh had to coax a few old faces out of retirement and had four players make their league debut. A few regulars had to be shuffled to cover unfamiliar positions so it’s fair to say it was a slightly nervous Welsh side that made the trip down the A3.

Portsmouth are a quality team, fierce around the ruck and with a quick rush defence and some very strong runners with ball in hand. Welsh started well opening the score with a try from prop Hannah Clarke who sneaked over in the corner.

Portsmouth didn’t let their heads drop and came back out strong. Welsh were forced to make tackle after tackle to keep the Portsmouth attack at bay. They held out until just before half time when, Welsh were reduced to 14 players for a high tackle, Portsmouth made use of their numbers and finally crossed the whitewash.

The second half was just as brutal as the first. Portsmouths’ attack was relentless and Welsh were putting their bodies on the line in defence. Portsmouth blitz defence was doing well at corralling the welsh attack and the final score line was 24-5 to Portsmouth Valkyries.

Portsmouth Valkyries sit top of the league and have remained unbeaten all season. This is promising to be the match of the season for our women’s team. We have come so far this season, over 14 new players have made their league debuts, 3 players have made the county squad, and the squad have all grown as rugby players and as a rugby family.

The match kicks off at Old Deer Park at 2:30pm on Sunday and we would love you all to join us for what promises to be a great display of rugby from both sides and most definitely a few drinks to be had in the bar afterwards.

Well it is St Patrick’s day so would be rude not to?.

See you Sunday! And in the meantime please make sure you vote for Camilla Campbell who has been nominated in the Maximuscle TRY OF THE MONTH!
